Our family relationships play a significant role in our mental health and overall well-being, so bringing families into the treatment process can prove powerful in many ways. At Manhattan Psychotherapy Services we take a systems approach, which is based on the idea that individuals cannot be fully understood in isolation; instead, we are best understood within the context of our relationships and interactions within a family system. This therapeutic approach emphasizes collaboration, communication, and connection, and it views the family as an interconnected and interdependent system, where the behaviors, thoughts, and feelings of one member affect and are affected by the behaviors, thoughts, and feelings of others. When we work to modify patterns of interaction within the family, we can elicit positive, healthy change. 


You may be struggling with a painful communication breakdown, which creates misunderstandings, conflicts, and emotional distance. Or you are going through significant changes in life like divorce, blending families, or the loss of a loved one, which can understandably create stress and disrupt family dynamics. Many times, we will also work with the families of children and adolescents that we see, because we operate from a systems lens and deeply believe that if we address challenges collaboratively, everyone within the family will not only gain valuable insight, but they will feel more resilient, emotionally bonded, and better equipped to effectively navigate obstacles and conflicts that arise in the future. Communication is essential, but it’s not something we’re born knowing how to do, and relationships are complex; we are here to help you better understand one another and to feel more fulfilled and connected.
